A LIGHT TOUCH
A concept for a five-star wellness retreat in Taupo, New Zealand. Designed with a minimalist with contemplative escape ‘’pods’’ within. Perched on the edge of Lake Taupo, vistas of distant mountain ranges are framed within the building arrangement and the native trees and landscape define the social and meditative enclaves. Natural local stone, off form concrete, rammed earth and native timber products have been used in the design composition to ensure authenticity and stainability.
Nature which offers a rich tapestry of textures, colours and forms is the design generator for Taupo Retreat. The buildings are appropriately transparent, reflecting and embracing the natural backdrop of tree settings and quiet groves.
The house is also transparent in the public areas and features private timber clad ‘’cocoon spaces’’. Public spaces are located close to the lake whilst the private ‘’cocoon spaces’’ are situated away from the lake, amongst tree groves and the rolling lawns, underscoring the design intent.
