Working with a beautiful Heritage home in a leafy Sydney suburb, our client’s brief was to add a contemporary extension to the rear of the home which would visually add to, rather than subtract from the heritage value of the home which they loved.

Our design response was to use the horizontal narrative of the verandas of the heritage home to inform the lines of the extension. The connection between the old and new is expressed differently on each side to respond to the architecture of the heritage home which is very different on each side.

At the rear, the architecture opens up entirely to celebrate the views over north Sydney and the harbour bridge in the distance whereas the sides are more solid and sculptural to provide privacy. Our choice of a simple colour and surface treatment was to showcase the rich and very detailed architecture of the heritage part of the home.
